HOW MEDICINE HAS CHANGED FROM THE 1900'S TO PRESENT DAY
During the 1900'S, a lot of tests and cures had come out such as chemotherapy ,and over the last fifty years things accelerated even faster because of the higher level of knowledge due to better schooling. The 1970's brought many newly-developed and discovered vaccines illnesses, diseases, cloning, and new surgeries. In 1996, a big leap in science occured when Dolly the sheep was made into the first ever clone. After that, surgeries had sky-rocketed when sex-change operations could be performed. The 1900’s was an an era where many new things were discovered and developed. . The 1900’s were better than the 2000’s because the knowledge was just more advanced which meant that more technology and medicines were developed and discovered. Operations, cancer treatments vaccines, and blood changes were developed. Microbiology made advances when Antonie Phillips first observed microorganisms under a microscope. the 19th century, all the doctors cared for patients as much as they did in the prior era.The years since 2000 brought incredible medical breakthrough which changes how scientists and doctors think today about some diseases and saving lives. The best part about these new medical breakthroughs is that not all of them are fully realized, since they have opened up pathways more research, treatments, and cures. Some of the breakthroughs with the most potential are on our collective health.
Nowadays, we are entering a world of stronger antibiotics which turns the hospitals into training grounds of super-pathogens. 2006 was when the first vaccine to target a cause of cancer was tested. The discovery of penicillin was the development of antibiotics and insulin was used to treat diabetes but had to be proven Other things were newly developed such as pharmaceutical laboratories around the world are constantly producing new treatments for diseases. In these most recent years, stem cells have been seen in almost every lab you walk into because scientists are starting to build off different body parts and new parts from growing those stem cells. These past years have also been focused on the different functions of the liver.People often ask themselves:What is modern medicine? The old ideas of infectious diseases, epidemiology eventually made its way to virology and bacteriology. That has been, to this very day, doctors main focus: the patients and it will probably remain that way for a while due to the different cultures of people and their standards are all very different from each other which gives the doctors a different challenge every day which they want to keep on doing .
INFLUENCE OF MEDICINE ON AMERICAN CULTURE
Medicine influences American culture because people basically depend on doctors and scientists to save their lives and develop new vaccines and cures for illnesses and cancers. American culture has changed over time because of medicine in the way that more technology and better hospitals have been built which changes peoples’ perspective of medical needs and how they can access better service and quality. Because of the increasing level of diversity such as race, religions, and beliefs which means that cultural competency is an essential skill for family physicians. Beliefs is what constitutes illness and acceptable treatment. All cultures have systems of health beliefs to explain what causes illness, how it can be cured or treated, and who should be involved in the process depending on their knowledge. Western industrialized societies such as the United States, which see disease as a result of natural scientific phenomena, develop medical treatments that combat microorganisms or use sophisticated technology to diagnose and treat the disease at the main cause/source. Due to the high proportion of Hispanics in hospitals nowadays, doctors are coming in contact with them and need to be able to communicate with them and meet their standards when it comes to treatments, medical beliefs, the diagnosis of their illnesses, therapy and health education.
In America, culture is one of the major factors to medicine because the patients’ needs and standards are important and to do so, the doctors and staff at hospitals need to follow a certain family’s beliefs and how they view medicine in their countries.Culture can be defined as “the shared characteristics of a group of people”, which may include patterns of behavior, beliefs, customs, traditions, artistic expression and language and is the part of each of us that guides our values, beliefs, and behaviors. Every culture has beliefs about health, disease, treatment, and healthcare providers, and people from immigrant cultures bring their beliefs into America’s healthcare system.Racial, ethnic and cultural disparities exist in all aspects of society, more when it comes to medical necessities and health care. People of diverse racial, ethnic and cultural heritage suffer from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and every form of cancer. Most people think that the Western version of medical approach is scientific we tend to view it as scientific and therefore as neutral, not influenced by social or cultural processes. But research says that anthropologists and sociologists has revealed the influence that social and cultural assumptions play in the western biomedical tradition.
